A combination of fiber-related terms has been suggested by others and applied in some areas of materials science and engineering. The need for a consensus in the nomenclature of fiber science and engineering is important because it will facilitate a better understanding among scientists and engineers interested in various fiber technologies. In this work, the important terms have been identified and a set of fiber nomenclature guidelines have been compiled. It is hoped that other fiber-related areas will adopt this nomenclature. Introduction An obvious and important goal for fiber scientists is to ensure a common knowledge base among fiber and filament scientists. With the increased use of fibers and filaments in the materials and technology fields, there has been a pandemic rise in the number of new, potentially confusing, terms that have been coined and used. Many of these terms are sometimes used interchangeably and some, while potentially confusing to a layman, are commonly accepted by scientists in the field. In fact, some of these terms have been commonly used and accepted in some fiber-related areas of science and engineering for many years.
